Life imitates art and vice versa. These products are a perfect example of that. The handmade qualities that come out in the Rabari collection are both elegant and trendy all at the same time and show us that class can be employed in even the simplest of everyday activities. Trove can’t go wrong in my book and the Grotte pattern is inspired by the original graffiti: cave paintings. Grethe Sørensen transports us from the cave to the future with Millions of Colors, her upholstery for Wolf-Gordon that rides the digital weaving trend.
1. From Trove, Grotte merges a primitive painting technique from the Paleolithic period with today’s version of primitive painting—graffiti. The inspiration and execution for this design was first inspired by European cave paintings, which count among the earliest forms of graffiti.
2. Millions of Colors is the worsted wool upholstery textile that Grethe Sørensen created for Wolf-Gordon. By mixing threads of basic colors, Millions of Colors yields smooth color gradations—creating a pattern of a lengthy 223.5’’ repeat. As a result, each piece of furniture upholstered is unique.
3. Doshi Levien, in collaboration with nanimarquina, has created a series of rugs that evoke the sensual and shiny world of tribal folk embroidery of India. The Rabari collection has three carpets that are based on traditional rugs made by tribes in India’s Gujarat region.
