Referred to as “shou sugi ban” in the West, yakisugi is heat-treated wood cladding made from Japanese cypress. An intense burning process chars the exterior surface, making Gendai yakisugi resistant to decay, insects, fire, and weathering. A light brushing reveals striking patterns and shadows highlighted in the natural grain. Due to the material’s durability, coating is not required. Nakamoto offers 13 distinct finishes, both oiled and unoiled, to enhance a range of architectural styles indoors and out.
