5 Flooring Trends for 2022 (TISE 2022)

Feb. 14, 2022

What’s trending in flooring? We hit the show floor at The International Surface Event (TISE) to find out.

Warm woods are back and gray endures, according to exhibitors at The International Surface Event (TISE), an annual Las Vegas showcase celebrating all things flooring.

We found these five hot trends for 2022 on the show floor. Which one is your favorite?

1. Warm (and Realistic) Woods

Woods and wood-look products never went away, but they’re evolving in response to consumer demand. End users increasingly want hyper-realistic wood looks and are gravitating toward warmer tones, said Robb Myer, vice president of Aladdin Commercial for Mohawk Industries

“Grays aren’t going away, but they’re getting a little bit warmer,” added Katie Gluibizzi, senior designer for Armstrong Flooring

2. Pops of Color

In 2022, designs will embrace pops of color amid neutral-to-warm backdrops, predicted Karen Sigrist, marketing manager for Daltile.

“We are seeing the emergence of the use of color in the interior design world,” she said. “Commercial and hospitality designers wanted to have more fun. They’re not afraid of the usage of color, and they’re trying to tell different stories in the space through color application.”

These color splashes pair perfectly with the whites and grays many interior designers are using, Myer said. Consider a colorful carpet tile as an accent or to assist with wayfinding. “You can use yellows, oranges and greens and really make a statement,” Myer said.

3. Curves and Shapes

Daltile has noticed that designers are embracing other tile shapes beyond the traditional squares and rectangles, Sigrist said. Diamonds, circles and even curved shapes will emerge in 2022, giving spaces a new sense of movement and shape.

4. Tactile Surfaces

Designers will be tasked with creating welcoming looks for people returning to offices and other commercial spaces. One strategy for helping people embrace the space they’re in is tactile wallcoverings with interesting textures. “This is about inviting consumers to go feel and touch,” Sigrist said.

5. Hard Flooring in Hospitality

Historically, hotels have been carpeted, but Armstrong Flooring is seeing more adoption of hard surfaces in hotel rooms for cleanability and infection control, said Julie Eno, director of channel marketing for Armstrong Flooring. Hospitality designers will still look to blur the line between residential and commercial in 2022 but will rely on hard surfaces to get them there.

“It’s not just comfort with the visuals and making it feel like home, but also a comfort level around cleanliness is really important in hospitality settings,” Eno said.
