There are few places as scenic as San Francisco and the Napa Valley on an unusually bright and sunny week. As design experts met at the Ritz-Carlton in Nob Hill, San Francisco lifted its veil of fog to embrace members of Mohawk’s 3rd annual Future Workspace Design conference.
Started in the spirit of understanding the ways in which design will transform over the years, the Mohawk and Daltile FWD event explored the 16 emerging trends as determined by forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort and her company TREND UNION, and allowed designer feedback on Mohawk and Daltile’s new designs.
The event opened with a welcome reception in Mohawk and Daltile’s San Francisco showroom. Surrounded by the clean simplicity of the white walls and perfectly displayed samples (the Durkan Lakir in special edition pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month was a personal favorite), 13&9’s Martin Lesjak and Anastasia Su presented the keynote on their work, including their partnership with Mohawk to create Moving Floors, launched earlier this year. The focus on the interdisciplinary methods from which 13&9 grew, as well as an emphasis on how the Moving Floors collection will evolve in the coming years, set an exciting tone for the week.
Thursday and Friday centered on TREND UNION’s forecast, discussing the impact of millennial habits on the offices of the future, and the changes they’ve noted in materiality and society, including the use of craft, visible fibers, and the blending of expectations on the genders. Additionally, attendees were invited to view Mohawk and Daltile’s 2016 designs and offer their feedback.
But no design event can be complete without a top-notch mingling opportunity. Thursday afternoon, three buses journeyed to the Napa Valley for a wine tour excursion to Silver Oak and Stag’s Leap wineries for appetizers and wine-tasting, quickly cementing the conference as one for the books.
