During the ninth season premiere of ABC-TV’s Emmy award-winning “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” (EMHE) First Lady Michelle Obama participated in a two-hour special featuring the Marshalls, a military family based in Fayetteville, NC, whose home is used as a transitional space for homeless female veterans. As part of her Joining Forces initiative, Mrs. Obama teamed up with EMHE, Blue Ridge Log Cabins, the Fayetteville community and other military volunteers to help renovate the house to better serve the families who live there.
A 15-year military veteran, Barbara Marshall uses her time and her home to help end homelessness among her fellow female veterans. To continue her work, the Jubilee House needed repairs and additional space. The newly renovated building was designed for Barbara and her family to have their own private space, which was once shared with all the residents, as well as several new rooms and features for the families they would be helping. Among the building products donated to help rebuild the house, approximately 900 square feet of Johnsonite’s Color EssenceTM Vinyl Enhanced Tiles (VET) from its Azrock Collection were used to create the newly added home gym. Due to their wide range of colors, slip resistance, low-maintenance requirements and high-performing characteristics, the Color Essence tiles not only helped the show’s designers achieve their aesthetic goals, but will also help the Marshall family enjoy their gym for many years to come.
The new Jubilee House is built in classic American Heritage style with an efficient, eco-friendly log home design from Blue Ridge Log Cabin builders. Like many of the building materials chosen for the house, Color Essence tiles are both environmentally responsible and people-friendly: the tiles contain a minimum of 23 percent pre-consumer and 6 percent post-consumer recycled content and are FloorScore® certified for indoor air quality.

The new Step-N-Stages Jubilee House allows the Marshall’s to host twice as many families as before, including an entire wing dedicated to the Marshall family. The Johnsonite Color Essence tiles used in the home are available in a wide range of colors including those that match the vibrant design of the Jubilee House interior and are manufactured to withstand heavy foot traffic. Additions like an extra kitchen, soundproof playrooms for the children and the workout space allows Marshall to continue her work helping fellow veterans have a place to call home while they create a new life for themselves and their families.
