Gumberg Global, the international division of shopping center developer J.J. Gumberg Co., has partnered with Atlanta-based architectural and design firm tvsdesign to bring a new, western-style retail experience to Indian consumers.
Poised to be the largest in Punjab, the North Country Mall will be situated on 21.6 acres along the busy Chandigarh-Kharar National Highway in Mohali. Chandigarh is among the most prosperous and fastest-growing cities in India, and the project reflects the rapidly rising fortunes of the area. The mall will feature more than 750,000 square feet of gross leasable area, with more than 325,000 square feet reserved for anchor tenants and 255,000 square feet for smaller retailers.
Still several months away from opening, the project has already been rated one of the best upcoming malls in India, and more than 75 percent of its 280 outlets have been pre-leased to a range of prominent international retailers including Marks & Spencer, Reliance Mart, Shoppers Stop, Kapsons and Store 99.
A popular feature will be the 160,000-square-foot food court, with an impressive outdoor party/entertainment balcony and fine dining outlets, as well as traditional quick-service restaurants. In addition, there will be several youth and adult entertainment options, most notably a 9-screen 1,800-seat multiplex, including an IMAX theater.
“We wanted to re-create the atmosphere found in shopping centers across the United States,” says Mark Carter, a principal with tvsdesign. “We wanted distinctive and inviting storefronts, wide corridors, grand drop-off points, an expansive central atrium and a truly welcoming atmosphere that will engage shoppers and retailers alike.”
The North Country Mall is slated to open in fourth quarter of 2012. For more information, visit www.tvsdesign.com or www.northcountrymall.com.
