HGA Acquires Leading West Coast Design Firm

Jan. 21, 2015

The acquisition of the San Francisco market leader further's HGA's expansion strategy

HGA Architects and Engineers (HGA), today announced the acquisition of ReelGrobman, an award-winning, San Jose, Calif.-based design firm. The acquisition strengthens HGA's current San Francisco Bay area practice, which now includes offices in San Francisco and San Jose, and expands HGA’s California presence. Ranked among the top 10 architecture and engineering firms in the country (according to Building Design + Construction’s annual rankings), HGA now has eight offices nationwide, four of which are in California, and approximately 650 employees.

"The acquisition of ReelGrobman is a natural fit for HGA. They are a strong market leader in the corporate interiors arena and bring well-known technology companies–such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Apple–to the HGA Roster,” said Daniel Avchen, FAIA, chief executive officer of HGA. “As a result, we complement ReelGrobman’s expertise and now provide the full scope of architectural design services to the California market.”

This marks the fifth acquisition completed by HGA over the past 15 years, which also includes the recent acquisition of a well-respected firm in Washington, D.C., to expand HGA’s nationwide scope on the East Coast. The ReelGrobman acquisition brings about a seamless integration of services, which includes everything from based-building architectural design to corporate interiors services throughout the country.

“While our roots are firmly entrenched in the Silicon Valley, we have always been a firm to embrace change, and this latest evolution is an exciting venture leading to a much larger, national platform for us,” said Winfield S. Roney, AIA, LEED AP, president of ReelGrobman. “We are now able to extend our design services to our clients as they also expand and open offices outside of California.”

Founded in 1953, HGA has helped shape the architectural landscape of communities throughout the United States from California to Washington, D.C. The award-winning, national firm is recognized for its expertise in the science and technology, healthcare, energy and infrastructure, higher education and performing arts industries. Some of HGA's most recognized contributions include community landmarks such as the General Mills Headquarters in Minneapolis, Minn.; Valley Performing Arts Center at California State University, Northridge in Northridge, Calif.; the Minnesota State Capitol restoration in Saint Paul, Minn.; and Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif.
