MONTERREY, MEXICO - HOK Mexico's design of a 40-story mixed-use tower in Monterrey, Mexico, was selected the winning entry in a design competition featuring several of the world's top architects. When completed in 2009, the tower will be the tallest building in the city and the fourth tallest in the country.
The multipurpose project includes 116 apartments on 30 floors with 11 floors reserved for speculative office and retail space. Stretching 590 feet from the ground, the 750,000-square-foot building will also accommodate 1,200 parking spaces. The tower will be located in a growing mixed-use community in Monterrey that is one of the wealthiest areas of the country.
The design was conceived as an abstract sculpture and is intended to serve as an icon for the city. The building's unique shape and high-tech glass façade will provide a striking, sculptural addition to the skyline during the day and a glowing white beacon at night.
Sustainability also plays a key role in the design. Green design elements include:
- Rainwater collection, storage and reuse for irrigation and toilet flushing.
- Low-flow plumbing fixtures and waterless urinals.
- Maximum daylighting.
- High-tech, low-E glass curtain wall to prevent solar heat gain.
- Monitored, high-efficiency underfloor air system that conditions only occupied spaces.
- Raised floor system to allow for easy access and adaptability of mechanical, power, and data systems.
HOK Mexico championed the pursuit of LEED® certification throughout the competition process, a proposal that currently remains under consideration.
