High-Tech Hospital Has Historic, Maritime Flavor
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has begun a $190 million, 20-year master plan to rebuild its entire campus along the coast of downtown Charleston. A modern, high-tech facility will reflect the community’s rich historic and maritime flavor. The project’s first phase, Ashley River Towers, resembles a luxury hotel with a tree-filled conservatory entrance, curved hallways with private patient and family walkways, and warm colors that reflect a nautical theme.

First United Methodist Church in Palestine, TX, is bridging worship of yesterday with the merging technology of the future. The renovation of the nearly 90-year-old church included hooking up its sanctuary with a new sound system, digital technology, new lighting, and plasma screens, creating a space that speaks the language of modern worship.

Library Goes From Stuffy to State-of-the-Art
The renovation of Central Catholic High School’s Clifford E. Brown Library in Pittsburgh combines historic references and high-tech touches. The 1927 Flemish Gothic-style building includes curved, transparent, blue panels that hang along the main aisle that mimic the arched entranceways to the room and diffuse light. Computers and flat panel monitors throughout the library receive broadcasts from the school’s in-house television studio.

Steelcase Spruces Up
Work has begun on a $17 million project that will integrate the Steelcase Global Headquarters building in Grand Rapids, MI, with the company’s nearby Learning and Exploration Center. A former manufacturing plant will connect the two buildings. The office furniture designer and manufacturer is also making major changes to its property, which will include bioswales.
