Tom Kundig: Works, and A Token of Elegance: Cigarette Holders in Vogue

Tom Kundig: Works
By Tom Kundig
Princeton Architectural Press | $36

In Tom Kundig: Works, the celebrated Seattle-based architect presents 19 new projects in locations ranging from Hawaii to New York City. Kundig’s commercial work—from multistory complexes to the Tacoma Art Museum and a line of hardware (handles, door pulls, hinges, and more)—appears alongside his award-winning residences, known for their rugged yet elegant and welcoming style. All are showcased in lush photography with drawings and sketches. In firsthand accounts, Kundig describes his projects and process with many personal anecdotes, effectively making the book as much memoir as monograph. It includes an introduction by design editor Pilar Viladas and in-depth conversations with Kundig’s frequent collaborators—”gizmologist” Phil Turner, contractor Jim Dow (Schuchart/ Dow), and clients (Bigwood Residence and Studhorse).

A Token of Elegance: Cigarette Holders in Vogue
By Martin Barnes Lorber and Rebecca McNamara
Officina Libraria | $50

Through eye-catching photography, and extensive historical and cultural research, A Token of Elegance: Cigarette Holders in Vogue examines the rise and fall of cigarette holders’ popularity. This comprehensive and visually stunning collection introduces smoking implements to the academic discussion of design of the everyday object. And although this doesn’t necessarily fit into the interior design world—unless a chic boutique hotel starts handing out cigarette holders as luxurious amenities (!)—we thought it might be a nice way for some of you to spend your holiday cash.
