HDR, as executive architect on the Martin Luther King Outpatient Center project, was recognized at the 45th Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards today during a gala luncheon hosted by the Los Angeles Business Council. More than 40 world-class projects from a diverse spectrum of the architectural field were celebrated at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for their design excellence and community impact.
A model for culturally-sensitive healthcare, the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Outpatient Center is a design-build collaboration with design architect HMC Architects, and McCarthy Building Companies. Part of a transformative and phased county program to upgrade existing facilities on the 38-acre MLK Medical Center campus in Los Angeles, the new 132,550-square-foot LEED-Gold-designed outpatient facility houses an ambulatory surgery center, five operating rooms, dentistry, oncology, women’s services and physical and occupational therapy services. OSHPD-3-compliant, it is designed to help reestablish the campus as a healthcare leader in the community. Located adjacent to the hospital, the high-tech steel and glass outpatient center fits seamlessly within the context of the existing campus. Utilizing a whole-person approach to patient care, the safe and accessible outpatient center reflects the bright new vision for the medical "village."
“The MLK project is an illustration of our commitment to design excellence and execution,” says Amy Williams, managing principal of HDR’s Los Angeles office. “This is a signature project for the community, our firm and our partners. It’s an honor for HDR to receive this recognition from the Los Angeles Business Community.”
For 45 years, the LABC has hosted the Los Angeles Architectural Awards ceremony and luncheon to honor design teams for both their aesthetic vision and their contributions to the community as a whole. Featuring an engaging keynote address by world-renowned architect Shigeru Ban, winner of the 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the annual event drew a crowd of approximately 600 of the region’s leading architects, designers, building professionals and media. Entire project teams—including building owners, designers, contractors and developers—were honored for their contributions to exceptional design in L.A. County and beyond.
“The L.A. Architectural Awards provide an opportunity for us to recognize and celebrate outstanding projects that marry excellent design with meaningful sustainability,” said Los Angeles Business Council President Mary Leslie. “Today’s winning projects exemplify the entrepreneurial, innovative spirit that makes Los Angeles unique.”
