Introducing the Summer 2017 Be Original Americas Fellows

April 25, 2017

Meet the students:

The Be Original Americas Summer Fellowship Program begins on June 12, and two students have been selected from an outstanding pool of applicants for a 7-week immersive experience in the making, distributing, and selling of authentic design.

Meet the two exceptional fellows for this year's program: Tom Groom and Irene Lee.

Groomh ails from England and is currently studying graphic and industrial design at the School of Design with a minor in new media arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

"I'm excited to meet the other student I'll be spending the seven weeks with and get to know her. Second, I've never been to New York before, so I'm really looking forward to visiting and having the chance to see some of the huge cultural landmarks and museums there," said Groom. "Lastly and most importantly, I'm very eager to learn as much as I can from the experience and hope to be able to bring some of that back to UIC with me and pass it on to my fellow students here."

Lee is studying design and environmental analysis with a minor in business at Cornell University, having additionally completed coursework in design at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

"I am excited to learn about the process of producing original design, all the way from the research to the distribution. I want to learn about the design philosophies of the companies we visit and hopefully develop my own to guide my future designs and work," Lee said.
