Industry Voices from Houston Post-Harvey

How the design industry can help comfort residents after the catastrophic hurricane

In the wake of natural disasters like Harvey--the category 4 major hurricane which touched down over Texas and Louisiana beginning August 23, 2017--there is a feeling of helplessness in not knowing how to help from a distance or if life will return to how it was before. i+s reached out to a few of our colleagues in the design industry who were located along the hurricane's path to see if they're alright, what they would like the design industry to know about how they're doing, as well as ways in which we can give back to help their communities.

This post will be updated as we receive more responses.

We have been very lucky in that we were spared the destruction. We received 28” of rain, but had limited flooding.  The areas south and west of Houston are suffering greatly. Houston, Rockport, and Corpus are getting a lot of publicity, but we have so many small towns that no one is talking about. Some of the smaller communities have 100% flooding of every home and business. Some of these communities will cease to exist with this kind of damage. Some schools cannot open for months.

We have two fundraisers happening to help the smaller towns. First for anyone that wants to make a monetary donation I have set up an account. People in our industry know me and can trust ALL the money will be used to support these areas.

Secondly we are taking donations of gift cards, clothing and bedding at the address below. Please bag and tag according to size and type (like sheets-queen or shoes- women’s 8).

It will take years for Texas to recover but recover we will! Thanks in advance for your help and support.

Lindsey Nisbet, EarthWerks

The storm has been beyond surreal for the people of the Texas Gulf Coast, and it has just been amazing to see communities come together.

Our company has had over half of our employees directly affected by the storm. Swiff-Train Company (parent company of EarthWerks) has branches in 3 of the affected cities of Harvey’s path. While we are now back up and running, many members of our Swiff-Train family have been displaced and are dealing with damage to their homes. Others are volunteering in their local areas and helping loved ones with the recovery efforts. We are, however, back open and pushing forward to catch up on everyday business, as well as expand our efforts to help our communities.

We have launched a YouCaring account to assist our many employees that are needing assistance with the recovery of Hurricane Harvey.

Again, thank you for reaching out.  We truly appreciate your support!!

All the best,
