Circadian Lighting Helps Hotel Guests Get a Good Night’s Sleep

May 15, 2019

Worldwide hotel chain IHG is incorporating circadian lighting by partnering with Healthe by Lighting Science to put the JOURNI Mobile Task Light in guest rooms.

Staying in a hotel can be far from relaxing. A recent study commissioned by international hotel chain IHG found that four in five people have trouble sleeping when traveling. In an effort to help travelers get a good night's rest, IHG is incorporating the JOURNI Mobile Task Light, a guest-controlled circadian lighting system powered by Healthe by Lighting Science.

Variable settings for the JOURNI allows customization for any guest's needs. Here are three examples. 1. GoodDay spectrum. 2. JOURNI's neutral setting (made for everyday task lighting). 3. GoodNight spectrum.

“JOURNI is a good fit for hotels because those that are travelling tend to experience trouble sleeping, fatigue and erratic schedules,” notes Healthe Product Manager Holly Prievo. “JOURNI helps to regulate the circadian system and get guests the sleep they need when they need it, and energy when they are low on it.”

With more than 5,500 worldwide properties, IHG also offers guests specialized bedding and aromatherapy for a more relaxing atmosphere.

Logical Light for Travelers

Healthe is dedicated to assisting with circadian rhythm – the body’s wake/sleep cycle of a person’s 24-hour internal clock  – through the use of research, science and patented technology.

The JOURNI LED light is a compact, portable and low-profile option for anyone who needs a boost of healthy light. It features settings for variable uses:
  • GoodDay helps as you start your day. It’s supplemental lighting for the morning as you wake up and get ready for the day. The lighting is enriched with blue light to be energizing and help focus.
  • GoodNight spectrum is meant to be used before bed. It’s depleted of blue light to prevent unnatural exposure to stimulating blue light prior to sleep.

Priveo offers an example of how the lighting can benefit guests: “If a guest has an early morning wake up for a flight, they may want to try to go to bed slightly earlier. But there may still be work to do at 7 or 8 p.m. This is a great place for GoodNight task lighting. It will reduce their exposure to blue light while still illuminating the work space or the room as they are packing and prepping for bed. Then, the next morning when they have to wake up early, the GoodDay setting can help them get energized and focused so they are not so groggy getting back on the road.”

Hotels are mainly about comfort and sleep, and Priveo says that IHG has recognized the importance of creating a space that supports the pursuit of a good night’s rest while away from home.

“Offering circadian lighting that can be manually controlled by guests to emit the spectrum of light needed for the desired benefits is undoubtedly the next big trend for major hotel brands,” she notes. “Every room requires lighting, but it no longer has to be counterproductive to the guests’ desires.”
