Decorative Surfaces Conference 2019: Award-Winning Keynote and 2 New CEUs

Those looking to learn all about decorative surfaces will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in the material at this year’s Decorative Surfaces Conference, Dec. 3-5 in San Diego.

The annual conference for commercial and residential interior designers will feature panel discussions and networking opportunities, along with an award-winning keynote speaker and several new additions, such as CEUs.

“This is the first year we’re bringing in materials exhibits and offering two CEUs on materials sustainability,” says Kenn Busch, founder of Material Intelligence and co-organizer of the conference. “It’s also the first year our keynote speaker is a distinguished designer.”

Alexis Readinger (pictured), is this year’s keynote. A hospitality designer and founder of Preen Inc., Readinger is well-known for designing award-winning Los Angeles restaurants like Tesse and The Heroic. Her discussion will focus on the future of hospitality design and will take place on Dec. 4, the designer-focused day of the program.

Around 100 people are expected to attend the three-day event, held at the Hilton Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA, a San Diego community.

Half of the attendees will comprised those in the architectural and design industry and student design communities, while the other half are materials suppliers.

Attendees will have the chance to enjoy a golf outing and opening reception on the first day, while traditional programming will follow on days two and three.

Busch says the event’s goal is to provide attendees with the latest updates on healthy materials and circular building economies through various program elements, including two new CEUs:

CEU: FSC-certified materials used in every commercial project
CEU: Formaldehyde and its role in sustainable building materials

There will also be, for the first time, curated materials exhibits, where attendees can touch and feel materials—a similar concept to interiors+sources signature Materials Pavilion, an annual display that Materials Intelligence helps host each year at NeoCon.

The exhibits give attendees a chance to ask questions and get answers on materials from on-site experts such as regional distributors, millworkers and fabricators.

“Our goal is to create an open channel of communication between materials suppliers and design specifiers,” says Busch. “Through presentations, roundtable discussions and networking opportunities we believe both sides will come away informed, inspired and engaged.”
